I emailed Bose support two questions: what the difference was between the GS and non-GS speakers (other than size and color), and what improvements were made between the original 321 and the Series II 321.
The speakers will only work with Bose systems, specifically the ones they're designed for. As for why you're only getting 5.0 instead of 5.1, I'll let others comment on that.
